Primary English: Teaching Reading Comprehension Skills

This course will focus the different skills needed in order for pupils to understand what they are reading.

Reading … feeds pupils' imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds. National Curriculum

Reading is a complex activity which involves a range of different skills including the ability to understand, summarise, infer and predict. During the course we will consider how these skills can be taught within the classroom and how we can plan for progression across the school. Time will also be devoted to exploring the importance of prior knowledge, vocabulary skills and developing fluency in reading.

The session will highlight the importance of identifying those pupils who struggle with comprehension and suggest practical activities to support them in their learning.
