Course summary:
After a brief review of research demonstrating the link between oral language and educational attainment we will explore a range of strategies and ideas for developing language skills within the KS2 classroom.
Speak for Change, a recently published report from the All Party Parliamentary Group on oracy, stressed the importance of oracy in our schools recognising that, because it is not assessed, it is often regarded as a poor relation to other subject areas. The report highlighted the benefits of oral language to educational attainment, literacy and vocabulary acquisition, health and well-being and a range of other areas. Given its significance and positive contribution to pupil outcomes it is imperative that, within our schools, there is a focus on developing spoken language skills.
During this short session we will explore a range of strategies and practical ideas for developing oral language and vocabulary in our KS2 classrooms. This will include the use of drama, debate, discussion and presentations. If oral language and vocabulary is an issue in your classroom or it is an area you wish to develop further, come and join us to find out more.
