This session is for all chairs, or governors aspiring to this role and wanting to understand the key roles and responsibilities.
An effective chair of governors should:
- Give a clear lead in organising the governing body's work
- Delegate roles and ensure other governors are fully involved
- Manage meetings efficiently
- Hold regular meetings with the headteacher
- Keep other governors fully informed
- Co-operate with other agencies to support school improvement
Learning outcomes
At the end of the session delegates will be able to:
- Explore the different aspects of being the chair, including
the importance of developing effective relationships with the headteacher and
other governors
- Consider some of the practical demands of the role, such as
chairing a meeting, setting the agenda and working effectively with the clerk
- Understand how to take the lead on strategy and
accountability.
